Editorial Standards
These are the standards we hold ourselves to, and the ones you can hold us to.
Sourcing and verification
We attribute claims to named sources wherever possible. Anonymous sourcing is used only where a named source would face real risk, and is disclosed as anonymous with as much context on motive and position as we can safely give. We independently verify claims before publication rather than relying on a single source, especially for claims originating inside Eritrea, where verification is hardest and the cost of getting it wrong is highest.
Right of reply
Any person or organisation that is the subject of significant criticism or an allegation of wrongdoing in our reporting is given a genuine opportunity to respond before publication, and that response is reflected fairly in the piece.
Opinion vs. reporting
Opinion content is never presented using news-style formatting. It carries a distinct background, an "OPINION" label, and the author's name and photo, and it reflects the author's views, not the outlet's.
Pseudonymous bylines
Contributors who face real risk — including those with family inside Eritrea — may publish under a pseudonym. The mapping to their real identity is held offline, encrypted, and separately from the publishing system.
