Sudan-Eritrea Military Alliance May Trigger Tribal Conflict
Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, the leader of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, recently concluded a one-day visit to Asmara, Eritrea’s capital, amid growing unrest in Sudan. Accompanied by members of his new cabinet, El Burhan met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to discuss security, military cooperation, and economic ties.
The discussions led to agreements that highlight Eritrea’s readiness to offer strategic support to Sudan. Eritrea’s role will be modest, but it is seen as a valuable ally in the current situation.
President Afwerki reiterated that Sudan’s crisis should be resolved by its own people, with regional backing. He stressed that Sudan’s sovereignty, stability, and unity are crucial for the entire region’s peace and security.
El Burhan thanked Eritrea for its support during Sudan’s conflict and expressed a strong desire to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations moving forward.
Experts believe the visit was aimed at securing Eritrea as a key ally for Sudan’s military while addressing concerns about armed groups operating in Eritrea’s western region. This issue could play a significant role in the broader regional security landscape.
